About Liesl Jobson

Liesl Jobson was born in Durban and went to school in Pinetown, Cape Town and New Canaan, Connecticut. She studied music and creative writing at the University of the Witwatersrand. She is the winner of the Inglis House Poetry Contest (2004), the POWA Women’s Writing Poetry Prize (2005), the Ernst van Heerden Creative Writing Award (2006) and the Faye Goldie Award (2007). She received an Honorable Mention in the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Short Story Competition (2006) and a Pushcart Anthology Special Mention (2007). In 2010 she was shortlisted for the Sean O’Faolain and the Thomas Pringle short story awards.

Her flash fiction, poetry and short stories have appeared locally in Chimurenga, New Contrast, Carapace, Green Dragon, New Coin, Botsotso, Timbila and Fidelities, and internationally in The Southern Review, Blip Magazine, Quick Fiction, The Common, LICHEN, Per Contra, Sleeping Fish, Cezanne’s Carrot, elimae, Wigleaf, NOÖ Journal, Smokelong Quarterly, Literary Mama, FRiGG, Mad Hatters Review, Slush Pile and Night Train.

She is the author of 100 Papers, a collection of prose poems and flash fiction (Botsotso, 2008). Her first collection of poems, View from an Escalator was published with a Community Publishing Project grant from the National Library of South Africa’s Centre for the Book.

She is the national editor of Poetry International Web, South Africa and a senior correspondent for Books LIVE.

A keen single sculler, she also rows on the ocean.

    Hiya Liesl, still haven't got the hang of what's where in blogging world, so posting my comment on the first open space I can find. Wanted to say big congrats on yr opening night Poetry Africa performance. Really good poems, well delivered. The 2 don't always go together!! Strength to the pen (or keyboard strokes).
